About SoloDallas
Hi, and welcome to my home (I was taught – when studying English in the younger years – that you shouldn’t ever say “my home”: it’s implicit in the word “home”. But this is an informal, friendly place – and so it will stay – so I took the liberty to express it that way).
This is a place I have long wanted. I have told you about it, several times, in several ways. It’s been in my mind for a long time.
Why? Because. Because I wanted a window on the world where I could talk to you from. And keep on playing the guitar from. Show you things, with detailed information, in written, video or any possible media format form available to us. I have been studying myself and rock and roll for quite some time now – maybe twenty long but fast years – and I have learnt a few things about both (me, my guitar & rock and roll, actually).
My name is Filippo F. Olivieri, a perfect stranger and a simple nobody. I was born in Dallas, TX (USA) back in 1968 and I now live in Rome, IT (still an American Citizen). I always liked Star Wars – as a kid and as an adult – and I kind of looked like Harrison Ford at times (yes, I know) so I had called myself “Solo”. Since I love America, I also gave it a little addition and it became – childishly – SoloDallas. So no, it didn’t have any relation to playing the guitar, yet: just a foolish, simple screen name.
With it – though – I got some recognition some time ago on YouTube, where a few videos of my goofy figure playing rock and roll had gathered some 14 (fourteen) million video views and a few thousands “subscribers”. Now that YouTube channel of mine is lost, but I built this home for me and for all of you who will want to keep on doing this: play rock and roll.
So who am I? I am a bit of few things. First of all, I try to play guitar. Electric, blues based guitar and some folk (acoustic) guitar. I am also a bit of a gearhead for certain things (mainly, good rock and roll sounding things, among guitars and devices), a geek and a nerd trying to liberate himself of his nerd-ness by means of rock and roll music. There, that’s me (at least in part, talking music-wise).
There’s a few more things I want to tell you about my philosophy – I won’t be heavy (I’ll try not to) but I need you to know that this place isn’t about me – me – me. I’d like it to be about you, too.
This place won’t work otherwise, and I want it to work. Because I like it. I’ve been doing this – this internet rock and roll thing I mean – for years now. 6, probably. Got into it for good (I hope, if I don’t get arrested or shut down again for copyright infringement).
I’ve put comments an video response features in it for now, but I plan on making some of you “posters” (not posers) here as well, not only me. I don’t want to be playing like if I was in front of the mirror: and at times, I do that. The internet can be good, it’s been good to and for me, I hope it will continue to be so with this other adventure of mine.
Yours,
sincerely,
Fil

Fil, i was thinking about one thing, do you have any plans to have some sort of dealer anywhere to sell your replicas?
Was thinking if that could sell them more easily, you know, you make some deal with certein guitar stores and they provide your replicas at their shops or is able to order them directly from you, doesn’t sound to bad or what?
I happend to know about a guy who runs an local guitar and instrument store that deals with alot of stuff, he isn’t one of the big guitar companies and has been doing his work for years, great guy one can easily sit and talk for an hour with, he also does repairs and even have modifed basses and guitars earlier but i think he has stopped with that since he’s not getting younger exactly.
http://www.mabass.se/index2.htm
At least in Scandinavia with this guy, and to help these smaller guys out since they have to compete with the larger companies that runs alot of the market, why not try out to let some of them be some sort of dealers for Fil so that he can sell his replica localy?
Just a thought, and if you could think of it, i think this dude could be a good choice if so
What do you think?
Regards – Seb

Fil, Did I read you were working on a replica of the SVDS with just the circuitry?
I’d be very interested in getting my hands on one of those!
Spook mate, yes, I confirm. I am in London now, but the very first prototype should be ready right now as I speak.
I did want to bring it here with me, but we didn’t make it in time to assemble all parts. Anyway, will be ready soon.
As soon as I have the proto, I will do the following:
- compare it publicly (video/audio) with one of my original SVDS systems
- once demonstrating that they sound exactly the same has been accomplished, I will start a pre-order list with 30% advance payment collection. I think we will start with 100 units, the “special edition” which will resemble closely the original SVDS receiver box (black box). I say again, the replica will NOT be wireless. It will be like a stomp box in the sense that, one input jack and one output jack (to amp).
Later on, IF successful sales, we will make a standard edition which will be cheaper.

Its commingggggg !
Have a great time in London.

Great. Look forward to seeing the vids. I’m Angus in an AC/DC Trib. I’ve got my vintage SG, am soon to be upgrading to a 70′s JMP MV 2203. I’m thinking this will be the perfect compliment to use as a stomp to get that sound. I’m looking for the sound side of the SVDS so I can go from my Sennheiser wireless into the box then into my amp.
Cracking!
Ah great, one with a Sennheiser wireless, which one do you have? I’m looking for a nice modern wireless.
Quite an old one now. It’s the G2 EW172. Does the job an a nice long range for being carried around a venue on our singers shoulders!! Very hardwearing transmitter too, I have mine in a pouch on a custom strap thesedays butthe metal case has been bashed a lot and it still works just fine.
Yes, I see. There are some on Ebay now and then, and there is also the very interesting G3 series with built in EQ.
I’m rather a beginner who plays in his living room and with my weight there won’t be a singer who carries me around (well, maybe one of those wrestling guys, hehe), but I love the freedom of a wireless.

I think I’d wind up breaking my neck if we weren’t all on them!!!
Our Rhythm guitarist has the new line6 one. He reckons it’s amazing. Real good tone like a lead and no noise

Do I do a good thing if I buy a cetec vega wireless system on ebay?
Write to me soon
thank you for the help
You do, you would, but which one? The only one that will sound similar – and requires expert modification – is the R42/T77 combination. Don’t buy ANYTHING else Cetec. Waste of money!
If i don’t find it I believe I’ll buy yours?
thank you Fil
Without “?”
RIght now you won’t find any. Additionally, these are now expensive
You need to be able to modify it as well, or it won’t sound right, almost unusable. I would wait and buy “my” replica… but of course you are entitled to do what you wish
about 6 months ago
You’re right. But, will you tell me a good wireless system in the future. I need also it (with your replica). Ok?
Thank you again

Line 6 relay as said!
perfect digital(!) wireless system at a really low price.
No noise, no signal loss and more range.

line 6 relay
Thank you. I’m taking some information about it. I’d like to your idea about this chance:
-Replica/Cetec vega: Is possible to have the replica for the sound and the cetec for the wireless?
I’m sorry for the stupid question!!
Tell me if the line 6 is better wireless system and confirm it to me…
thank you for the help
No, the cetec uses now illegal radio frequencies. Usage is not allowed anymore. Just get a modern wireless, and the Line6 is a good candidate.
Ok. I like your idea.
I hope to have enough money to buy these objects you told me.
Thank you again for the help

Never saw something like this
Hello Dries,
not yet, but its a surprise nonetheless, I know the seller, but won’t tell who
Well, it’s the Cetec Vega version of the SVDS basically, but it needs a transmitter which is DAMN HARD to find.
I think it might be possible to feed the guitar signal into the circuitry. Past the wireless module and the expander. He still has it, but probably won’t sell it.
I’m searching for a R42 receiver now, with or without an transmitter. Next I can experiment myself modding the circuit. But those are also damn hard to find
about 6 months ago
Would work maybe, but give you a different tone because the signal has to pass through the whole compander unit (transmitter compresses, receiver expands) for the correct tone. just feeding a signal into the unit after the expander would work probably, but sound different.
I’m sorry to disturb your conversation but, which transmitter does this vega need?

wireless transmitter?

Yes.

I’m probably posting this in the wrong place. In fact I’m pretty sure I am but I don’t know how to add to the Performance Videos section yet… Anyhow, I went and tried out a 1978 JMP 2204 today with a 4×12 that was loaded with UK made Greenbacks. It sounded really awesome! I also brought my JCM800 to try on the cab because I was thinking of just buying the cab. Basically I got to use both amps on the same cab and hear the differences between the two amp types! Cool! So first I tried the JMP… VERY sweet tone and VERY vintage sounding. Loved it! Plugged mine in afterward… hmmm quite similar yet I could definitely hear a difference. I decided to remain $2400 richer and debt free and did not buy the gear. I decided instead to come home and try to tweak my amp (and mic placement) to try and achieve some AC/DC tone. This is what I recorded today using nothing but an SG Standard, my JCM800 combo, JCM800 4×12 cab with Vintage 30′s and G12-70′s, an MXR DynaComp, Shure SM57 mic, and Protools 8 LE. I definitely duffed the solo… LOL… no big deal (for now) and I think there is some more tweaking to be done. I really wish I had an SVDS to try! Unfortunately I am unable to do video recordings as of yet (hopefully in a week or so…) so I did a quick picture montage instead. So here it is! Let me know what you guys think!

If you mean the user video section, just click on the “User Videos” in the “Performance Videos” section and then you can enter a youtube link and a title for your posting.
Like the tone very much, maybe the mids are a bit thin compared to the original, but its nonetheless a very great tone and already close to the original. Have similar results with my JMP 2204 here. And I think your playing there wasnt so bad at all, I’m still fighting with the solo
Recording-wise I think you will improve with a diffent mic, a condenser mic will get you a warmer tone and it will capture more of the details. I got great recording improvements when I went from Shure SM 57 to Shure PG27. I would try to make the mids fatter, either by moving the mic closer to the outer edge of the speaker cone, or by using G12-65 speakers.
Thanks Franz, I’ve posted it in the right place now! When I recorded this I put the mic about a foot and half away in front of the cab. I was looking for something to sort of enclose the front like they did with the plexiglass but didn’t have any plexiglass so instead I found this bulletin board with a plastic back. I stuck that in front about two feet away with the mic in between (obviously…lol). The results were surprisingly effective believe it or not! lol I could definitely hear the difference when I played back a track with the board and without… interesting… I will have to experiment with that a bit more. I’ll try your mic placement ideas too and maybe crank up the mids a bit, I had them set to 6. As for the condenser mic, I might have to wait a while for that. I am in the process of having an 18 watt tube head built for me. I oipted for that rather than buying another amp that was so similar to mine. The 18 watter should be able to capture those old AC/DC tones pretty well too!
Thanks for your input!

Alright, wrote a comment there instead of answering here.
Is the PG27 is a USB microphone only?
I see them on ebay for around $150.00 but they all mention USB.
I will want one that has an XLR connector to be able to plug it into my M-Audio. Do you know of any other decent ones that don’t cost an arm and a leg?
There are two versions of the PG27, a USB and a XLR version. I’m using the XLR version, together with a M-Audio FastTrack. Well, condenser mics are usually more expensive, the PG27 is already one of the cheapest, baught mine new for 130 Euros.

For you, to get the sound of early years (1974-1975) of ACDC, which speakers are better: G12M greenbacks or 30 vintage (I don’t remember the really name this one)?

Thank you to listen to my questions
I would go for Greenbacks. But I never heard the Vintage 30s, maybe they are a better match. Already putting christmas wishlist together?

I hope…I hope that within June I’ll buy something I love.
You’re right. I’d choose the greenbacks, too. I love old objects. I’m 15, but I’m in the same time an old person.
Thank you again
Yes, I see. Try to do a ggod research on the speakers, maybe the 30s are also interesting. Cant say anything about them.
The 30′s sound really good too. They are just different. Having 2 greenbacks and 2 Vintage 30′s in your 4×12 is not unheard of!
I’ve seen a few do that in 2×12 combos and cabs to get the best of both worlds.

Anyone know anything about JMP’s that have Plexi style head cabs? I have the chance to buy a ’78 2204 like this from a guy. He says it is a rare edition. I might take his 1960ax 4×12 too if we can settle on a price. I’d post a pick of the rig but I’m not sure how so here is the link to his ad:
http://montreal.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-musical-instruments-amps-pedals-Marshall-JMP-2204-1978-Marshall-4×12-1960ax-Greenback-2006-W0QQAdIdZ320677724
Any thoughts?
Never heard of a Plexi style 2204. But nonetheless, if the 2400 CAN$ are for both the amp and the cab, it sounds like a good deal. If you can get it cheaper, even better.
But before making any decision, I would request photos from inside the amp and also a photo of the serial number.
I’ve seen some of the older 4 input jmp’s that looked like they had plexi style head cabs. People say that sometimes Marshall would just put an amp together once in a while with a couple parts from other that they had left over. I’m going to try it out this weekend. I might be throwing my Gibson Explorer into the deal because he is interested in it so I might not have to pay out that much cash in the end!
…and yeah I just did the conversion from Canadian dollars to Euros and compared to what you guys over there are paying for this type of gear I guess it is a pretty good deal!
Yes, thats exactly what I did
I was relative lucky to get my 2204 from Great Britain for about 800 Pounds a year ago, but the prices went hight since then.
I’m just waiting to see if he wants to take my Gibson Explorer in the deal. He is the one who asked ME about it from an ad I put up so he is definitely interested. I love that guitar and have had it for over 15 years but I really don’t play it much since I got my SG. I sent him some pic last night at his request and am waiting to get some concrete feedback. All he has said so far is that “it is something to think about” lol!!! Come on dude!!!
Throwing the guitar in the deal should knock about $800 – $900 off his asking price… hopefully…
about 7 months ago
Hehehe, then I’ll keep my fingers crossed that this will be a deal for you
about 7 months ago
Thanks man! Let’s hope the planets are aligned just right for this deal to go through! lol That cab with the greenbacks should sound wicked too! Mine is pretty good with the vintage 30′s but I’ve always wanted to have one with greenbacks. Actually if the deal doesn’t go through I’m planning on getting a couple greenbacks so I have 2 of each. Should make for a nice blend!

A quick silly question: say if I were to buy a Marshall JMP from U.S. will it run fine with 220V of mains imput or will I need an AC adapter? (because here in EU we run things with 220V or 240V rather)
I know it’s a silly question and a quick one but I’m all so tired at the moment to look it up anywhere else.
Besides You folks here are all so generous of knowledge when it comes to sharing it =)
Thank You in advance.
Hey Dave, they usually have a voltage switch for 110/220V selection. But often they are hardwired because the switch broke.
So if the amp is hardwired I’d have to rewire it to 220 ?
Yes.

I think my JCM 800 has a switch on the back to change the voltage and I’m pretty sure the JMP’s do too. You probably need to change the power chord though to fit the electrical outlets where you’re from.
Does anyone know of a good place to order a replacement caster wheel for a Marshall 4×12 cab? I would imagine they are pretty much all the same but specifically I would need one to go a an early 80′s JCM 800 (1960A) cab.
Saw them from time to time on ebay, but I would go for a new one. I believe the big music stores have them as spare parts too.
Yeah I just found a new Marshall caster on ebay. The price is okay but as usual shipping is way too high. I mean really, $22 to ship one friggin’ little wheel from the US to Canada! Seriously?!?!
Fil, i’am sorry for this may be seen as spamming but i’d like to hear your opinion, again sorry for spamming i wrote this in your latest BiB attempt but i’d really would need some answers to this if i may ask for it.
How do they solve the potentional issues with noices while playing in studio and live? Is it all damping the strings very carefully and removed in the final sound on recording or what? I’am sure they are skilled enought to not make any unneccecary noice that’s not part of their playing/sound. When i play on my 2203 even when i try my best to damp the strings and play carefully and planned and avoid making unneccecary noice there is allways tons of feedback while i am not playing at any volume over 2 on the master and the amp is oftenly making noice i don’t think should be there, can it be a wiring issue in the guitar? i’am using the stock Gibson SG Standard Reissue V.o.S Tremolo circuit that came from factory, it’s a 62´year model Les Paul SG in faded Cherry which you have seen. I’am not sure, i only changed to an Angus Pickup, and i have changed guitar cable, still no improvement if rising the volume over 2, so i am changing tubes (not groove tube yet it’s electric harmonics i think, just a test swich) so to see incase there is any improvements, i am having thoughts of changing the whole guitar circuit, do you have any advice for a potentional good ‘kit” which is mainly ”plug and play”, i need 500k pots with 4 conductor wiring and it should also be at least 60s wiring but preferly 50s wiring so to be able to clean up without getting a muddy tone, i might also change to Rio Grande Barbecue pickups, and i wanna be able to use two pickups since i don’t only play acdc so both pickups should be able to ”flow” and have use of 50s wiring, i am ready to try anything to get rid of all feedback
The seller didn’t had time and i wanted the guitar quickly when i asked him to put in the Angus Pickup so the pickup cover that was on the original Angus pickup wasen’t put on but the cover that was sitting on the stock pickups (burstbuckers i think) , i wanted to play the guitar fast and told him it probubly doesn’t matter if it’s a stock cover or not, can it be the pickup cover? The Angus Young Pickup is supposly wax pottet so it shouldn’t have feedback, can it be the pickup cover that is the issue since it’s the burstbucker cover bolted on it?
Really appritiate any advice
Hmmm…I think I would check the guitars wiring or let it check by someone experienced. There shouldnt be any noise when master on 2. General advice here: list up all potential problem causes and check them all, piece by piece. I would start with the guitar or try out another guitar and see if the noise is gone then.
Banane have you changed your circuit before to a brand new in your guitars? Like changing to 500k pots circuit and stuff like that?
No, I have a 2009 SG with a PCB inside and modded it with a AY sig pickup. No noise, even not with master on 8 on my 2204. I really recommend trying another guitar on that amp and vice versa this guitar on another amp. Easy way to point the faulty piece.
Sure i will try that
But just incase i would like to change circuit and/or pickups in this year or in 2 years is there any really good kit you can recommend so i can write i down incase you know of some?
Some people sell pre-wired harnesses on ebay. Basically you just drop it right in, solder up you pickups and you’re ready to go!

seems like a grounding issue
couple of questions to get a picture
do you get feed back when the guitar is left on its own or when touching the metal parts of the guitar i.e strings?
do you get the same with another guitar? (if you have one
)
does the guitar jack rattle?

Well, i’am not sure, and sorry! I had forgotten to try it out, have had so much going on lately so but i will try it out at one moment when i can, but i notice the large guitar feedback is still there when i crank it close and above 2 on master volume.
No the guitar jack is fine and sits there tight, and i have changed cables to Ernie Ball cables, one long and one shorter but they are of good quality, and changed tubes to Electronic Harmonix(correct name?) EL34 and 12Ax7 tubes and notice, thought it feels hard to notice a difference tone wise, i dunno.. Maybe it’s subtle.. It feels more ”Marshallish” and i like them better than the 6550s i had inside earlier which was probubly not of a good brand, there are good 6550s out there , and NOS expecily
So fresh tubes are installed, i will try to swich to another guitar with the same amp settings to see if it still has feedback, it could be a wiring issue perhaps since it was a pretty hasty work and i wanted the guitar quick when i had the pickup put inside.
Hmmm could it be the caps inside the amp?

Allright i tried my V.o.S SG custom with the Angus pickup in it, and then tried with the much cheaper Tanglewood (?) copy , both with the boost pedal and the cheaper guitar didn’t at all make any squeeling sound or pickup feedback, i guess it is an wiring issue with the SG since the Amp didn’t make noice with the cheaper guitar and settings.
I think i’d go to try change the whole wiring and pickups when i’am on it, i would like 500k pots, and also 50s wiring technique with 4conductor, 2 tone/2 vol knots and push/pull splitting, and also gonna swich pickups to Rio Grande BBQ pickups, and also some sort of bumblebee caps for the wiring, the whole stuff, think it’s for the best to just swich the whole stuff inside the guitar to remove all potentional issues i don’t wanna have to struggle around with.
Is the RS stuff good? Would like to use really good Boutique stuff

Maybe you could try the guitar in a different amp and maybe try a different guitar into your amp. It’s possible that you have some noisy preamp tubes too. I had some in mine and even before really turning the volume up I could hear crackling and humming and stuff. I basically just tried different tube combinations until it was quiet. It might be a similar case with yours. In a nutshell… if you try a different guitar in your 2203 and it’s still noisy you have an amp problem and if it’s there when you plug the guitar into another (similar preferably tube) amp then you know you have a wiring or shielding issue. Does it do it when you switch to the neck pickup too?

The head is being worked with a tube swapp probubly as we speak, i hope it will change, and i’am gonna swich guitars and see if it still has the same problems, so hopefully there aint no damage to the head but you’ll never know..
Hope for the best

It’s probably just something small. Those old tube amps were built to last! Mine is a jcm 800 4104 combo (2204) and I’m sure I could throw it down the stairs and it’d still power up after as long as the tubes were intact!
