Hello Fil, I must confess…..I check the site every morning to see a nice review of yours of the Wizard amps, especially for the Vintage Classic, because a I own it but it is from 1996 and Rick told me it has different power transformer, your should sounds better…..thanks

Found a picture on Wizards website under their artists section, has Malcolm next to some. But they seem to be older the 1990 (The Razors Edge Tour).

Rick told me that Malcolms pickup shows around 6k Ohms, it is an old Gretsch pickup that either has a higher output than most or that at some point it has been rewound with extra wire to give 6k.
My own Gretsch pickup stopped working so i sent it for repair and asked for the extra winding and boy does it sound good!!! Hope this helps, Cheers.

His Filtertron pickup was rewound in the early 70′s, so it is not the stock one anymore.
TV Classic Plus pickup by TV Jones (Gretsch pickups guru) could be a good alternative as it has more midrange than standard TV Classic (Filtertron recreation).

That’s a great info!( for me ) I asked Mr. Jones, he answered me for Mal sound I’d need the classic plus!

Im getting one too

I have one in my MY sig. It sounds better than a std. filtertron, more midrange, more growl and less harsh.

One extra info for perfectionists.
You can choose from various pickup covers, to get it more authentic.
“You can order US Pat # 2892371, Pat Applied For, Blank (1958), Hilo’tron open, or TV Jones covers. No extra charge.”

Applied those setting above, to my Marshall MG stack, and it sounds absolutely amazing now! I had to tweak the gain by one to get it running and had to switch to the crunch channel, but it sounds clean and crisp, with the just right amount of bite!
Thanks! -Nick

Why did AC/DC use 3 different type of amps on The Razor’s Edge Tour?
You can see a mix of Marshall(of course), and Mesa Boogie cabinets, and the Wizards are hidden somewhere.
It’s quite difficoult to understand what actually they use….look at the pictures took at the BI tour in 2009…
http://musikkweb.no/html/news/SOUNDCHECK%20MED%20AC_DC_382894820
Rick and their amps are in the pictures but there is also a mountain of marshall heads……so, do they all have a “Wizard heart” inside or are them Marshall hearted?

Very good question! (Wish I knew the answer…)
I did notice his guitars though, his main black one had 2 bridge PUPS! He also has 2 of his red “Lightning Bolt” guitars, hard to tell if ones the original, and the very last one is a black SG custom with a white pickguard and different colored hardware. Very possible it is the same one he used during the Highway to Hell, Fly on the Wall, and BUYV tours!

, and just to make sure, that’s gonna get rid of the sweat build up on the back of the neck….not just polish over it right??
yes it gets rid of it, i always get a nice giant sweat spot where my arm rests on my SG n it gets it off n shines it up nicely
about 2 months ago
Yes sure,
Presence 0
Bass 3-4
Mid 0-2
Treble 7-8
Volume (High Treble) 5-7
His pickup is wound slightly hotter at aroung 6k,
Good to share the love!!
Wow no mids and high trebles, and a Gretsch is allready bright sounding, really hi-fi sound here.
A question to brannyman….what do you mean with “His pickup is wound slightly hotter at aroung 6k “? it is different to normal filtertron hs pick up? Thanks for the amp settings

Hi All,
Great topic, i too own a Vintage classic, awesome amp, Rick gave me Malcolm’s and Angus’s settings. Rick is a top guy, i met him at a show in the UK and he took me on a backstage tour and introduced me to ‘Wizard World’ behind the scenes under the stage, just fantastic!!
According to Rick the amps onstage are all wizard inside but as AC/DC have always been associated with Marshall they keep the badge!!
Hope this helps.
Branny.

Branny! You let the secret out!
Just kidding. THANKS for the info and for being here

PS Branny, if you feel like posting also Mal’s settings, please feel free to do so.
Otherwise, it’s understood!

That’s the anwer to my question, why you see Marshall amps on the stage but the sound is Wizard!!

It sounds so good!!!
Thank you for making these vids!

Any chance we can get a gutshot of this amp or would st pierre not allow that?
it is true!!! we must give a good space here =P

also because he always devotes many rhythms to ac / dc!

Fantastic, Fil!
What about Vintage Modern settings? Are you keeping us excited?
Would be interesting to know Malcolm’s settings, too. He is greatly omitted most of the time (in general).
Malcolm is such integral part of the AC/DC sound and to me, maybe even more important than Angus. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Angus (and every other band member for that matter), but my AC/DC hero is Malcolm.
If you ask Angus, he says “My part in AC/DC is just adding the color on top. Mal’s the band’s foundation”, isn’t it a nice way of describing their dynamics?

Yes, I know that interview. I think he pretty much nailed it
He stated a few times before, that according to him, Malcolm is better player than he is or that Malcolm could easily play what he plays, but not the other way around.
Well, both of them are unique.

I love how you played the guitar solo where do you learn? Or did you get your yourself?
I’d like to learn those solos!!=P

Would love to pick Rick St. Pierre’s brain a little lol. I think I heard the wizards that malcolm uses are really high wattage so he really gets alot of clean headroom.

fil is this cab your using have all four G12-65s?

Fil,
For us you’re not nobody !!!

Very very interesting Fil
So my playing with my clean boost can`t be wrong, i just have the wrong speakers.
I will find that out.
I would say that you may have the “wrong” speakers for SOME, peculiar AC/DC tone, dating from 1978 onward; but prior to that, I am fairly confident they were using G12Ms and or G12H30s. So, if you are willing to capture fully the Powerage, likely Highway to Hell and Back in Black “spirit” tone wise, you may be willing to get a pair of G12-65s
about 3 months ago
PS, as of “today’s” Angus Young sound, St. Pierre said Angus is using G12Ms; I assume he was meaning live. Studio, we don’t know for sure. But I think we can realistically suppose that in the studio he’s been using – recently – G12Ms.
The Studio sound (which is THE sound I am after; I don’t care about live sound and frankly, I don’t even care about AC/DC recent tone, during the last 20 years; I am stuck in 1981 lol) is always a different thing and we must always be very careful. I think I was able to prove – I hope so – that from 1978 to at least 1980 (Powerage, HtH and BiB) G12-65s were used largely, on most of the songs and parts; I guess also G12Ms were used in bits and pieces, maybe some parts, maybe some solos etc.

oh yes, i see, i have made my thoughts, i think my two greenbacks in a small 2×12 box sound too compressed. I`m sure it would sound much better in a 4×12 box, but that would be too loud, because my mother is watching TV all day above my room in the celler
The greenbacks have just 25 watts and the G12-65 have 65 watts, i`m sure this will sound better even in a relatively small box, just less compressed.
I like all ACDCsounds so far except the Stiff Upper Lipp sound, but my intention is to get the HTHsound AND the BIBsound.
These two sounds are my absolutely favorites !!
And yes, therefor i have the wrong speakers.
I will try out the G12-65 when i find two of them for a good price and if i doesn`t match these sounds then, i will bring the amp to a very good tech, because my amp is heavy modded. I don`t know all modifications exactly, but i know for sure that my PCB isn`t original and so i would let them rebuild my amp.
I would go for a 4×12 anyway. I run mine very silent as I told you, and it still sounds nice
And I think it’s a very good idea to give your amp a rework.
I only use 4×12 nowadays. Even with little amps, I plug them into a 4×12.
a 4×12 ?? Yees, maybe later, step by step, at first i will reaload my box with two G12-65, then i will see/hear how it sounds. A 4×12 with 4 G12-65 is not the cheapest thing on earth and i like to buy the replica as well. Perhaps the 4×12 is the last thing i would buy, just the end of the chain and before the end comes have all the other things to be good or right.
i odered a 4×12 box right now and hope to get two G12-65. That`s why i sell some things on e-bay now. I came to the conclusion to try a different box with different speakers instead to modify my amp. Could be easier. I studied the sound of a bigger box with the “right” speakers a lot and i must say that a 4×12 box with G12-65 sound very very different compared with mine 2×12 and the greenbacks.
But i try to get only two of the G12-65 at first, because of the money, and the other two will be my greenbacks. I it won`t sound like it should be, then i will go and let modify my amp. The last thought will be, do i want the original sound of the 2203 or shall i try to find someone who build up the wizardsound in my amp. Wizards and old Marshalls sounds a bit similar.
I just want to thank Fil and banane for ansering my questions, I really appreciate it, you guys saved me from buying the wrong speakers. Im ordering 4 G12-65 heritages for my cab right now. One last question is it better to get all 4 G12-65s?
Well thank you, that’s why Franz and I “founded” and are running this place for. For this
Hard to answer you. The perfect match could be two G12-65s and two G12H30s.
Angus DOES use G12Ms (at least live) right now. But you know what the oldies and goldies AC/DC were recorded with from 1978 onward

I got the WIZARD VINTAGE CLASSIC 100W for 1.500euro from a guy in Italy one year ago, I sent pictures to Rick and he told me this head was built in 1996. I’m looking forward a good review from solodallas about this great amp.
P.S.: Rick told me Malcom uses this head, then who knows….?
Ciao Fabio,
I think both Mal and Ang use the Vintage Classic. They may be different heads for the two brothers, this I don’t know.
What we do know is that Angus also uses the Modern Classic
about 3 months ago
Actually I don’t know ” when ” they use Wizard heads in live performance, checking Live at River Pate for example, when Angus starts the first song I think he is using a Wizard, but looking at Mal’s side there is not any Wizard, only Marshall, also in Cirkus Krone, while in Stiff upper lip and in No bull you can see some Wizard or ARD (as Rick said “they are always the same but for Australian market”). In any case you are making a good and an helpful work with this site. Thanks
